Belle Grove Plantation is a Bastion of Shenandoah Valley History

You’ll step back into history when you set foot on the Belle Grove Plantation property. That’s because the plantation itself dates back to the late 18th Century. Plus, the family who owned the property, the Hites, were a part of the German immigration to the Shenandoah Valley in the early 1700s. Construction of the plantation began in 1794 and was completed in 1797.

The plantation produced wheat and Merino wool, and operated a distillery, sawmill, and grain mill, as well. The property stayed within the family until 1861 when it was sold at the start of the Civil War. The property has been preserved by the careful and thoughtful 20th Century owners who occupied it. Today, the bright building is preserved as a National Historic Landmark, and it is a property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It rests as the centerpiece for the Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historic Park and is open for educational purposes and tourism.

Notable Moments in History

While it is rich in its own history, it also holds a special footing in Civil War history. In it, Union General Philip Sheridan and his troops staged the assault of the Battle of Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864. The Battle of Cedar Creek is a part of the Lynchburg Campaign that ravaged the Confederate supply lines, leading to the Confederacy’s eventual surrender.
