Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, and enough scenery and terrain to keep any outdoor enthusiast happy are just a few of the things that make this part of Virginia special. One of those places is Stony Man Mountain, near the town of Luray. The Stony Man Mountain hike has some of the best views in the area. You don’t have to be a trail veteran to enjoy the short trek to the top of Stony Man Mountain!

The Stony Man Mountain Hike

Just topping an elevation of 4,000 feet, Stony Man Mountain is the second tallest mountain in Shenandoah National Park and offers views of the park’s south fork, according to SummitPost. Thanks to convenient trail access from the Skyline Drive, getting to the Stony Man Mountain trailhead is easy. From there, you can choose either the Stony Man Trail or the Passamaquoddy Loop.

The quickest trip to the top of the mountain is the Stony Man Trail. According to the National Park Service, this easy trail is only 1.6 miles long and features 340 feet of elevation change. Starting from the Stony Man parking lot, the trail follows the Appalachian Trail until splitting off and leading to the viewpoint. The trail itself loops around the mountain and back the Appalachian Trail. From there, you can head back to the parking lot, or continue on the longer Passamaquoddy Loop.

The Passamaquoddy Loop is a circuit trail 3.5 miles long and climbs 770 feet, according to the National Park Service. This trail doesn’t go to the Stony Man Summit, but it’s great if you’re looking for a longer hike that loops around both Stony Man and nearby Little Stony Man. The trail ends back at the Stony Man parking lot.

From the parking lot, you can also find the Stony Man Horse Trail, which heads to the mountain’s summit.

The Views

The Stony Man Mountain hike rewards hikers with an amazing overlook of the area! This short hike pays off, and from the mountain’s viewpoint, you can see Luray, the George Washington National Forest, and a stunning view of the valley itself.
